Visiting the beautiful tree-covered Appalachian Mountains for a weekend, I stood on a hill overlooking a lake, viewing the valley and hills in the distance. The warm late afternoon sun created intense shadows as the breeze rippled gently though the grasses and trees. Shadows on the hillside are almost indistinguishable from ripples in the lake as the land blends into the water.
